ANDRÉ DURAND Twenty-First Century Paintings
CORONATION OF THE VIRGIN
Dimensions: 127 x 183
Oil on linen
To emphasize the paradoxical unity of the Holy Trinity, and to transcend pictorial constraints with spiritual and religious ideas, Durand has turned to Andrei Rublev’s medieval icon The Old Testament Trinity, a triad of identical archangels. Durand’s Holy Trinity is void if any noticeable earthiness, of corporeality of form and manifestation of love. Equally absent from it is that cold soaring of the spirit, so remote from humans. The artist has struck the balance between soul and spirit, the corporeal and the imponderable, endless and immortal.
